I. Introduction

African-Americans have played a profound role in shaping the U.S. business landscape. Technological innovations like the traffic light, automatic elevator doors and even caller ID all sprung from the minds of creative black luminaries.

Historically, black-owned companies, like Madam C.J. Walker’s hair-care line and the businesses that formed Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Black Wall Street, were developed in direct response to racial discrimination. Nearly a century ago, thousands of Black Tulsa, Oklahoma residents had built a self-sustaining community that supported hundreds of Black-owned businesses, the "Black Wall Street." In 1921, there was a huge racial massacre in Tulsa, the Tulsa race massacre, a tragic event perpetrated on Black Wall Street, which has been described as the single worst incident of racial violence in American history.

The black community’s long history of entrepreneurship is marked by ebbs and flows. The Reconstruction era, the period after the Civil War, saw a sharp rise in the number of black-owned businesses as the country attempted to right some of the inequities of slavery. But in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the resurgence of Jim Crow laws enforcing racial segregation, coupled with the Great Depression, led to the decline of black entrepreneurship.

The rate of black business creation continued to rise and fall throughout the 20th and 21st century, increasing in the ’90s, dipping during the 2008 recession and rising again post-recession. In recent years, the number of black-owned businesses has risen dramatically, with black women fueling much of that growth. In 2003, Oprah Winfrey, arguably the most notable black female entrepreneur, became the first black American billionaire.

Data from the Small Business Administration indicates that just over 19 million businesses, or 70.9 percent of all U.S. businesses, are white-owned. Blacks own about 2.6 million businesses, or 9.5 percent of all U.S. businesses, and Latinos own 3.3 million businesses or 12.2 percent of all American businesses.

II. Art and Entertainment

Black American entertainments continue to forge ahead and break through systematic stereotyping while overcoming barriers in other categories of entertainment that the Black community is actively engaged with. Music is just one of many examples of how Black culture has—and will continue to—build bridges of affinity with other cultures. It comes as no surprise that one of the biggest contributions that Black culture has cultivated is through R&B, Hip Hop and Rap with music artists like Drake, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Migos, and Cardi B.

Also, televisions and movies have seen a large transformation, with more all-Black casts featured than ever before. Shows like How to Get Away With Murder, This is Us, Blackish, Grownish, and Scandal are more recent examples of breaking through barriers of casting Black leads in primetime television. In addition, digital content providers like Netflix have been proactive in their desire to offer diverse content, including Black storytelling.

Black-owned Board Games

Despite rapid technological advancements, several families consider connecting and bonding over a board game. Hence, more people prefer to shun digital activities and opt for a better and meaningful experience. Therefore, the need to engage with family and near and dear ones is expected to drive the demand for board games. III. Banks and Businesses

The companies that comprise the nation’s largest black-owned financial firms continued to seek new avenues for growth in an ever-changing environment marked by digital evolution, regulatory adjustments, institutional demands and consumer preferences. Depending on the sector and corporate strategy, some firms stalled while others took off. Collectively, these institutions are pursuing a range of strategies to boost their viability and, at the same time, maneuvering how to deal with the new $1.5 trillion tax overhaul law that begins this year and runs through 2025.

Black-owned Banks

Today, there are 42 Black-owned financial institutions in the United States, including credit unions. Taken together, they have approximately $5.813 billion in assets in total. Black-owned banks provide customers with access to the financial resources they need and the chance to invest in the financial health and well-being of their community.

Black-owned banks also play a critical role in fighting modern-day systemic racism in the financial sector. Of the 42 Black-owned financial institutions in the country, exactly half are not-for-profit credit unions.

OneUnited Bank

V. Education

Higher education in the U.S. tends to be decentralized, propagates capitalism by assuming higher quality education through competition, and promoting equal opportunity and social mobility. Whites have traditionally determined the type and extent of education for African Americans in the United States; these educational policies have largely reflected the prevailing white culture’s ideas about the role of blacks in society, especially their relations with nonblacks. Thus, public activity in this area has mirrored closely the general attitudes of the white majority toward the black minority. Both whites and blacks have recognized the relationship between education and control, so policies related to the education of African Americans have extended from prohibition to encouragement.

Black-owned Bookstore

The number of Black-owned bookstores has declined significantly since 1999. That year, there were reportedly more than 325. But, by 2012 had dropped to about 50. In 2017, the number rose to about 70. We want to acknowledge some of the stores that are still going strong. As social distancing measures keep people home, independent Black-owned bookstores are among the many small businesses impacted by government-mandated shutdowns.

Black-owned small businesses often are more vulnerable financially than others, with smaller cash reserves to survive tough times. And now times couldn’t be tougher. In the wake of a pandemic and protests of George Floyd’s killing at the police’s hands, they are in jeopardy on every front.
The most obvious and critical way to help Black-owned businesses survive, of course, is to buy their products and services. Shop and eat at Black-owned establishments, and buy gift cards for your friends and family to spend at your favorite ones.

Buying and consuming Black-owned services is highly important to the Black community’s status generally and the status of an individual black person. Also, this reduces job discrimination, which segregated African Americans from higher-paying jobs, thereby closing the racial wealth gap.
Enormous consumer spending to the local Black-owned services will also strengthen the local economy and foster job creation and subsequent development in black communities and the nation at large.
